As the name suggests, the spirituality of the Liturgy of the Hours is focused on the Hours. The primary purpose of the Liturgy of the Hours is to sanctify the day and all human activity therein. It also fulfills the command of our Lord to pray unceasingly for the Church and humanity. Accordingly, each Hour has its own special character, its unique spirituality, with some hours more significant than others.
This series of talks gives an appreciation of the different hours of celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours so that we can participate more actively and meaningfully in the Prayer of the Church. We explore the effective means to participate actively, whether as an individual or as a community, so that we can reap the fruits of the liturgical celebration.
Recognizing the danger of routine, resulting in a mechanical recitation of the Liturgy of the Hours, we offer some guidelines to help us overcome the obstacles to a fruitful recitation of the Liturgy of the Hours.
Finally, since the Liturgy of the Hours is obligatory for certain groups of people in the Church, it is necessary to understand and apply the nature of the “obligation” imposed on them. Otherwise, one’s spiritual growth might be obstructed if we see the “obligation” simply on the juridical level.
Some of the topics that are dealt with in this series of talks include the following:
1. The Significance of the Hours Of Prayer
2. The Liturgy of the Hours and the Sanctification of Time
3 Liturgy of the Hours and Fruitful Participation
4. The Obligation of the Liturgy of the Hours
5. The Gifts of the Liturgy of the Hours
